Senaatintori (Senate Square)
Helsinki's Senate Square (Senaatintori) serves as a main tourist attraction of the city. Art festivals, concerts and snow boarding events are featured at the square on a regular basis. Music (digital carillon) is also played daily at 5:49 p.m. at the square. The square is surrounded by several monumental buildings including the Palace of the Council of State, the Helsinki Cathedral, and the main University building. At its core stands a statue of Alexander II. The statue was erected in 1894 to commemorate Alexander's re-establishing of the Diet of Finland. Today, the statue is a constant reminder and monument to Finland's relationship with Imperial Russia.
